My paintings explore the subtle messages that rise from the unconscious, those quiet signals that surface only when we give ourselves room to feel. Through layered color, gesture, and abstraction, I create spaces where intuition can lead and meaning can unfold on its own terms.

Each piece is an act of listening. I follow a rhythm of discovery, allowing form and movement to shift and reroute as the work evolves. What emerges is not an answer, but a threshold, an opening where personal symbols and emotional undercurrents can be recognized by the viewer.

Rather than offering a fixed narrative, my paintings serve as mirrors. They invite you to enter your own inner landscape, to notice what resonates, and to find connection in what can’t always be named. In the end, the work lives in the space between what is seen and what is felt.

I work in layered stages, adding paint, removing it, and refining the composition as forms shift and develop over time. My decisions are guided by color relationships, the tension and harmony between shapes, and a deep understanding of design principles. I respond to what the painting needs, allowing marks, textures, and structure to evolve through a process that is deliberate, exploratory, and rooted in close observation.

Calie Durant is an abstract painter whose work bridges a lifelong dedication to visual communication with a sustained commitment to a practice shaped through layered inquiry and revision. Raised in Hawai‘i, she was drawn early to the relationships between color, form, and atmosphere, sensitivities that would later inform both her design career and her studio practice.

Before turning fully toward painting, Calie worked as an Art Director and Designer in New York and San Francisco, leading creative teams and crafting cohesive visual systems across web, mobile, and print. During this time, she partnered with renowned clients including Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, Ogilvy & Mather, and Landor Associates. This background refined her approach to composition, structure, and visual clarity, elements that now underpin the disciplined yet expansive nature of her abstract work.

In 2021, Calie moved back to O‘ahu with her husband and two children. She now paints from her home studio in Honolulu, where a sense of rhythm, openness, and spatial awareness informs the ongoing evolution of her practice.
